Mason PUD 3 is seeking a customer-focused and dynamic individual to fill the position of Relay Technician. This position is responsible for work related to the construction, maintenance and repair of substation and related equipment, voltage control device maintenance and system protective device maintenance. Successful candidates must be willing to live within 30 minutes travel time under normal conditions of their regularly assigned headquarters or live within the district’s service territory.

Job duties:

  • Installs or modifies control settings with computer software or manual adjustment to relays and regulator control panels.
  • Connects test apparatus for performance tests or troubleshooting troubled relay circuits.
  • Analyzes test results and interprets electrical diagrams to locate defective relay control  devices.
  • Opens and closes switches to isolate defective relay and makes adjustments or removes relay for repair.
  • Tests circuit and equipment to evaluate such factors as settings, timing functions, I/O functions, communication, and other factors which affect function of the relay and controlled components.
  • Analyzes test data to determine performance characteristics of relays and effect of system modifications on relay performance.
  • Prepares reports of work performed on relays.
  • Construct and maintain substation steel structures, foundations, bus structures and busses, switchboards, transformers, conduit work and underground feeder terminals within the station.
  • Install and maintain electrical equipment used in the electrical operation of stations including switchboards, relays and recloser control panels (electromechanical and microprocessor based), electric storage batteries, circuit breakers and reclosers (oil insulated and vacuum), automatic time controls, regulators and regulator control panels, switch gear and protective equipment.
  • Perform a variety of tests related to the maintenance and repair of substation functions and associated electrical transmission and distribution systems as required.
  • Perform final in-service tests after equipment energization, being responsible for proper equipment operation and the confirmation of system integrity.
  • Prepare and maintain testing and repair reports and records as required.
  • Perform substation switching and related activities as required.
  • Wire, program, install and remove substation meters as required.
  • Back up and assist transformer shop mechanic with equipment prep and painting, transformer testing, and spill cleanup.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain relay and control wiring.
  • Inspect and maintain regulators, reclosers, sectionalizers and related equipment.
  • Inspect PUD substations as required, including preparation of the monthly substation inspection reports.
  • Present technical training related to substations, including reclosers and regulators, for   utility personnel as required.

Qualifications:

  • Journeyman Wireman status recognized by the district and the I.B.E.W.
  • Must have successfully completed relay technician training.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical maintenance, construction practices, standards and electrical theory as applied to transmission and distribution systems.
  • Must be able to read, interpret, revise and work from blueprints, system maps, work sketches, relay and circuit diagrams.
  • Demonstrative ability to problem solve and follow and understand oral and written instructions with little or no supervision.
  • Working knowledge of Washington State Electrical Workers Safety Rules and Regulations.
  • Valid Washington State Class “A” commercial driver’s license and a good driving record.

  • Valid First Aid/ CPR card.
  • Must be available for after-hours call out.
  • Ability to work with electronic devices such as iPads.
  • Excellent human relations skills as a representative of the PUD.
