The Manager of Accounting oversees the fiscal and accounting operations of the cooperative. This includes managing financial and accounting operational processes and reporting, as well as the ongoing development and monitoring of control systems and metrics designed to preserve company assets and report accurate financial results.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include other duties as assigned.
Manages the finance department including the daily financial, facilities, and warehouse activities and functions of the cooperative.
Ensures all financial operations are in compliance with governmental rules and regulations.
Forecasts and manages cash flow to meet the needs of the cooperative.
Provides guidance in financial reporting objectives and standards to ensure accurate, compliant and useful financial reporting is produced.
Oversees the budget process and works with department managers to produce and manage effective budgets.
Develops the departmental work plan and develops departmental goals and initiatives.
Engages with outside consultants and auditors.
Provides analysis and recommendations, compliant with Board Policy, regarding the allocation, retention and retirement of patronage capital.
Maintains awareness of the wholesale power supply and regulatory environment to ensure the Cooperative is well positioned to accommodate changes and/or actions that will have a financial impact on the Organization, including but not limited to the coordination of cost of service and rate studies.
Develops, recommends, and implements strategies to ensure the Cooperative achieves long term financial goals.
JOB DUTIES may include other duties as assigned.
Keeps the VP Administration informed of issues in areas of responsibility in a timely manner and recommends actions to the VP Administration for approval.
Accurately maintains the general ledger of UEC and its subsidiaries in order to meet the goal of receiving an annual “Unqualified Audit Opinion.”
Maintains loan fund records, prepares loan fund applications, and manages the loan application process.
Produces timely and accurate monthly financial statements and reports.
Coordinates debt activities with financial institutions (RUS, CFC, CoBank, etc.) ensuring access to capital in support of operations, while minimizing interest expense.
Schedules required tax and internal audit activities to ensure the completion of audited financial reports, auditor’s reports, and related materials by all assigned deadlines.
Prepares and presents recommendations to the Board of Directors as directed and required by the CEO.
Ensures RUS guidelines and GAAP standards are followed.
Works collaboratively with colleagues and fosters a spirit of cooperation in the workplace.
Conducts themselves in a manner that reflects well on UEC and contributes to harmonious relations with members and the general public.

Manages subordinate supervisors who supervise employees in the Finance/Accounting Department. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of staff. Carries out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Responsibilities also include performing annual employee performance appraisals, and in consultation with HR, VP and CEO, creating and implementing corrective action plans when required by employee performance.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field is required. Masters degree preferred.
Experience: Ten (10) years or more related experience and/or training in financial
management and accounting principles with an electric utility is desirable; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATES and LICENSES
A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) is preferred for this position. Must maintain a current driver’s license.
