Duties:

Telecommunications Planning and Design Technicians perform project assessments and apply hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) design principles to a variety of outside and inside plant coaxial and fiber optic projects. Duties include performing the planning, designing and tracking for multiple cabling projects consisting of fiber optic and coaxial cable systems to support Tacoma Power SCADA, Utility Technology Services, Click! Cable and Tacoma Water.

Projects  include fiber design for power monitoring and control, overhead to underground conversions, broadband services, joint trench plats, institutional networks and special projects.

Job Responsibilities:

•Plan and design proper placement of HFC plant for new service extensions and existing system
relocations to support Tacoma Power and Click! Network products and services
•Provide work order packets to field technician groups consisting of system design to be built
for new services which include fiber optic projects, coaxial plant extensions, MDU complexes
and commercial locations
•Coordinate with other work groups to complete requested services
•Coordinate with other utilities for placement of facilities in new plant builds
•Provide information to developers regarding system requirements and standards
•Provide marketing group with estimated design and costs for various sites
•Manage multiple jobs simultaneously at various stages, track and monitor status of ongoing
projects
•Effective customer interface, meet with new customers on-site to explain plan of needed work
for provided services
•Prepare and present written and oral reports or presentations as required
•Create and maintain system design maps. Provide map updates of system to be used by field
staff and Tacoma Power underground system locators
•Attend industry seminars and training sessions
•Participate in industry standards meetings
•Serve as a technical consultant to other departments as required

Experience Required:

Graduation from high school or equivalent and a combination of five years of experience in Hybrid Fiber Coaxial design principles and/or outside plant construction practices including proficiency with design software including AutoCAD, Lode, and Spatial Net for designing the HFC network

•Effective use of a personal computer and familiarity with computer programs including
AutoCAD, Lode, and Spatial Net for designing the HFC network
•Application of engineering procedures to Click! Network operations
•Manage multiple projects at one time
•Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
•Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
•Design Click! Network outside plant telecommunications systems
•Prepare engineering plans and specifications
•Maintain records and prepare reports
•Read, interpret, and apply, rules, policies and procedures
•Plan and organize work
•Meet schedules and time lines
•Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
•Compile and analyze technical data and information
