  • Oversees and directs the mechanical and technical maintenance department’s operations including personnel, safety, compliance and budget at NCPA’s Geothermal facilities.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of all equipment in the Steam Field and two geothermal power plants to ensure plant reliability and availability to meet NCPA member’s needs.
  • Coordinates and plans maintenance activities, equipment repairs, major turbine overhauls, and all other mechanical department activities with the Operation’s department Supervisor, Maintenance Planner and Plant Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Supervise and maintain effective working relationships with represented mechanical maintenance and technical maintenance staff at NCPA’s Geothermal facilities.
  • Plan for, manage, and complete maintenance assignments within the budgeted time and dollars allocated for the assignment
  • Plan labor and material needs for all outages and maintenance activities including contingencies.
  • Work with Maintenance Planner to determine required material specifications, qualify contractors and material suppliers.
  • Ensure a safe working environment, minimizing lost time accidents, conducting regular safety tailboards and scheduling required or needed safety training for the maintenance department.
  • Oversee and supervise turbine overhauls and major equipment repairs.
  • Evaluate budgets for parts, materials and equipment to identify areas for improvement in cost-effectiveness.
  • Enforce all Agency policies and procedures.
  • Resolve disagreements, day-to-day employee concerns, and level one grievances with bargaining unit employees.
  • Monitor direct reports’ progress relative to established job standards, provide coaching/development opportunities and assess performance.  Hold direct reports accountable to job standards.
  • Stay  current on applicable  safety (Cal OSHA/OSHA) compliance requirements.
  • Act as NCPA project manager after the award of contracts
  • Conduct tailboards with the Maintenance Departments to cover daily assignments, project status, safety issues and business updates.
  • Conduct studies to investigate equipment or operational problems, analyze data and provide recommended solutions/actions to ensure plant operates efficiently and effectively.
  • Prepare and present reports, daily work schedules and budgets, etc.
  • Reports for work on time and maintains satisfactory attendance in accordance with Agency policy. Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent.  Arrives to meetings and appointments on time.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Direct and supervise employees in the Maintenance Department, who perform both maintenance and limited operating duties.  Oversee operator technician personnel when those positions are performing mechanical maintenance activities.  Ensures work is done is a safe and efficient manner, in accordance with the organization’s policies, standards, and applicable laws. Train and instruct staff in operational procedures, policies, and practices. Coach and develop employee’s skills, capabilities, and competencies.  Provide mentoring and guidance to employees interested in advancement.  Create a positive team-oriented work-environment.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; and preparing detailed written operational reports.

Experience Required:

Education and/or Experience
Related Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university is strongly desired; Requires a minimum of eight to ten years of power plant experience, including experience with Steam Turbine Facilities or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience as a plant supervisor, project manager or lead technician is required. Completion of maintenance or mechanic technician apprenticeship or equivalent trade school education is preferred.

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals Ability to accurately and effectively write detailed reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, outside agencies or employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, and geometry, Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations

Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications read and interpret electrical, mechanical and civil drawings. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of and proficiency in using Microsoft Outlook email, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Access or other relational database software to perform job-related record keeping, job progress tracking, performance reporting, and related communications

Valid California Driver’s License with a good driving record and vehicle insurance.

Other Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of electrical and mechanical theory related to power generation, maintenance and operations.
