Glacier Electric Cooperative is seeking a full-time Staking Services Supervisor to join our organization headquartered in Cut Bank, MT. The staking services supervisor is responsible for investigating, surveying, and staking electric distribution and transmission lines in accordance with construction specifications; preparing and assigning staking sheets in a manner that will assure the best possible electric service and the highest quality, continuity, and voltage in the safest, most efficient manner possible.  This is a union position with an excellent benefits package. The successful candidate must pass an initial substance screening and, as an employee, will be subject to random drug and alcohol screenings.

Experience Required:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate must be able to perform all duties of a GEC Staking Clerk & Journeyman Lineman. Will be required to be on standby and be prepared to install and connect after hour services (both overhead and underground) in addition to responding to emergency outage calls. Must take stand by duty in GEC’s Cut Bank and Browning territories. Prepare right-of-way maps, legal descriptions and easements and direct the maintenance of the easement files and recording in the respective county recorder office as appropriate. Learn and stay current on N.E.C. and N.E.S.C. to assure all staked line work exceeds minimum requirements of the codes. Participate in safety meetings as directed. Design power lines to fit the locality, weather conditions, local activity and operations within or exceeding the requirements of the established Rural Utilities Service specifications. Review construction methods; assist in establishing and reviewing line construction designs to improve the way lines are built and to improve construction and maintenance practices. Manage construction projects for cost control and perform other duties as assigned by management. Will report directly to the Manager of Operations.


A Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field is preferred. Ten years experience working with an engineering firm doing staking work is desirable. A minimum of eight years experience working for a rural electric cooperative in their engineering department preferred. Must be a Journeyman Lineman with a Journeyman certificate. Must have knowledge of construction specifications of the Rural Utility Services and the National Electric Safety Code.

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically and mentally able to continuously perform strenuous tasks such as supervisory, climbing power poles, and ladders; lifting weight at least 75 pounds, carrying weight at least 75 pounds and holding over long periods of time; be able to lift and work overhead for long periods of time; be able to walk for up to 12 hours outside in all types of weather and over all types of terrain; must maintain a physical weight less than the weight capacity placards on all aerial devices; and be willing to accept duty calls under adverse weather conditions 24 hours per day. Initial and annual medical evaluation required to determine ability to perform essential job functions and subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Skills Required:

  • Must be skilled and proficient in computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, mapping, and staking software.
  • Must have excellent supervisory, organizational and communicative skills and be able to exercise good judgment and interact well with others, and supervise employees.
  • Must be able to operate surveying equipment.
  • Must be able to read and write legal descriptions of properties for obtaining easements and record them correctly.
  • Must be familiar with the National Electric Code, the National Electric Safety Code, and the Rural Utilities Service specifications for distribution and transmission systems.

Other Requirements:

Applicant must have or be able to obtain a minimum Class A, Type 2, Commercial Driver’s License and must be able to provide the required documentary proof. Must have completed or be willing to complete the Staking Technician Certification Program offered through the Northwest Public Power Association.
