Tacoma Public Utilities is seeking a dedicated Manager to lead its Safety programs and join our management team. We are looking for a collaborative, customer-focused Manager with strong business acumen, leadership and a strong desire to keep our workforce safe.  The right candidate will have proven success in cultivating a safety that strives for continuous improvement across all program elements and greater workplace safety.

Tacoma Public Utilities is a municipally owned utility serving approximately 170,000 customers across a service area of 180 square miles, and includes three key operating divisions; Tacoma Power, Tacoma Water and Tacoma Rail. Our mission is to “provide services that are vital to the quality of life“, which includes protecting the 1,300 plus employees working in our facilities and throughout our community.

The Safety Manager is responsible for the development, implementation, coordination and administration of the Company’s Safety programs, which include time loss prevention, safety training, all related investigations and assuring compliance with applicable State, Federal, Company, and Customer safety regulations, policies and procedures.  he Safety Manager will serve as a member of the Human Resources team and coordinate with the Administrative and Field Safety Teams. The position will provide subject matter expertise, create performance dashboards, industry benchmarks, reporting data and analytics, and be a safety advocate and leader for Tacoma Public Utilities with a focus in the safety regulations pertaining to Power, Water and Rail industries.

This position is critical to TPU and will require someone that can reinforce a strong safety culture, drive TPU’s safety vision & mission and effectively collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.  The Safety Manager will work with designated Departments to review the Utilities current safety structure and formulate a gap analysis to determine procedures and programs needed to reduce overall injury rates.

The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to the organization, think strategically and manage the complexity of a multi-faceted safety program.  We are also seeking a candidate that can communicate effectively across a diverse organization, instill trust in the employees and foster an environment that creates growth and development.

Experience Required:


  • Five years of increasingly responsible experience leading, managing and supervising staff in a large organization;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental safety or related field preferred OR equivalent experience may substitute for degree;
  • Utility industry experience preferred;
  • Valid Driver’s license required;
  • Familiarity with Federal, State and local regulatory requirements.
