Duties:
Tacoma Power’s Generation section is seeking a seasoned, innovative, results-oriented engineer with strong communication and technical skills who enjoys a variety of engineering projects and a progressive work environment. This position is located and based in Tacoma, Washington and supports four hydroelectric river projects located in Pierce, Mason, Lewis and Grays Harbor counties.

As a Principal Mechanical Engineer you will apply your years of experience to a variety of capital and maintenance projects for four fish hatcheries, several fish transport and handling facilities, hydroelectric power plants, dams and spillways. You will be working as part of a team of mechanical, civil, electrical and structural engineers and technicians to provide technical services to operations and maintenance staff. You will have the opportunity to mentor other engineers and lead projects with a mechanical focus such as fish handling and rearing improvements, water treatment upgrades for fish rearing, and hydroelectric generator rehabilitation.

Responsibilities include:

  • Participate on diverse working teams involved with design, fabrication, installation, maintenance/repair/rehabilitation of fish facilities and hydro-mechanical equipment
  • Prepare drawings, specifications, schedules, work plans and other documents to refurbish and/or upgrade mechanical equipment and systems
  • Evaluate and select components to refurbish and/or upgrade mechanical equipment and systems
  • Project Management for maintenance, improvement and life extension projects
  • Direct work performed by vendors, contractors and consultants
  • Oversee fabrication and installation work
  • Prepare calculations and cost estimates
  • Develop specifications and RFPs, review and approve bids, negotiate and manage contracts, and approve payments for contracts
  • Prepare O&M manuals
  • Troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis
  • Support the continuous reliability of mechanical systems
Experience Required:

Desired Qualifications:
•A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university

AND
•A minimum of nine (9) years of mechanical engineering experience with equipment and systems applicable to this position

AND

•A Professional Engineering (PE) license from a recognized license board in an appropriate engineering discipline and/or the ability to obtain a PE license in the State of Washington upon appointment

Additional Qualifications for Principal Engineer:

•Five-years of experience as a licensed Professional Engineer with lead or supervision experience

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to travel up to 5 hours per day, spend several hours per day traversing over uneven ground, ascend and descend stairs and ladders, and ascend/maneuver on temporary scaffolds to access equipment
