Duties:

PURPOSE

To control preparation and distribution of Association’s payroll and maintain employee master-file records on a current basis to ensure accurate deductions, pay and record keeping.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

  1. Establishes and maintains employee master-file records. Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of payroll files and records.
  2. Verifies that all employees’ time sheets have been received and/or input, properly approved, have proper accounting distribution, and checks for accuracy.
  3. Inputs and monitors all payroll deductions such as taxes, benefit contributions, child support payments, garnishments, union deductions, and changes in all voluntary deductions.
  4. Establishes and maintains fringe benefit records.
  5. Prepares all payroll related journal entries and maintains and balances payroll general ledger accounts.
  6. Assembles data and prepares payroll tax reports (W2’s, 941’s, etc.).
  7. Verifies and submits for payment billings for employee benefits, union contributions and dues, plus all other employee-contributed programs.
  8. Prepares quarterly audit work papers, information for the annual tax return, various audits, financial reports, special requests, and projects.
  9. Promotes a safety culture in which safety is a value. This culture is based on joint and individual engagement, ownership, and accountability regarding job safety and responsibility to perform work safely and adhere to safe work practices.

ESSENTIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualified candidates are required to have the equivalent of a high school education and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience with payroll administration and systems, preferably in utility or construction-related environments involving union contracts.
  • Preference will be given to those candidates with at least thirty (30) semester college or vocational credit hours in accounting and business-related courses.

 NOTE:  MEA will consider, in its sole discretion, relevant work experience in lieu of required education qualifications or other required certifications or qualifications.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS

This position is classified as a nonexempt, represented position, and is eligible for overtime compensation based on both Federal and State of Alaska laws.  All Association employees are expected to work widely varying amounts of either (1) unscheduled overtime such as during power restoration activities; or, (2) scheduled overtime required to accomplish special projects.
