This is journey level mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of utility fleet vehicles, construction equipment, power tools and facility building and grounds equipment. The employee works as a mechanic responsible for performing skilled work in the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered fleet vehicles including light and heavy trucks, bucket trucks, Vac-Con truck, backhoes, excavators and other construction equipment. Additional responsibilities may include the maintenance and repair of facility building and grounds and facility equipment such as generators, compressors, pumps, motors, etc. This work may involve using welding equipment, lathes, drill presses, grinders, etc. for the occasional fabrication of parts or to perform minor bodywork. Additional duties of a non-mechanical nature may be assigned to the employee with required training provided on-the-job. Work is generally performed in the fleet repair and maintenance shop, but may also be performed in the field or at other MW&L facilities. This work requires the safe use of mechanic tools, power tools, electronic test equipment, welding equipment, drill presses, lathes, floor jacks, and other equipment. The employee is in frequent contact with petroleum-based chemicals and solvents and vehicle exhausts and is required to exercise proper safety precautions. Work also involves lifting, carrying, or moving heavy parts and equipment. Work is performed with technical independence at the journey level, as coordinated and directed by the Senior Mechanic, under the general direction of the Purchasing Manager. Minimum Experience and Training (In order to be considered for the selection process, applicants should have the following minimum combination of experience/education training.)
Experience with the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel vehicles and auxiliary equipment, and must possess standard mechanic’s tools. Computer skills are required and must have experience using current vehicle diagnostic equipment and software programs. High school diploma or equivalent is required.
