As the Manager of System Planning, Operations and Asset Management in the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Section, you will manage the operation, design, analysis, and asset management strategy of the Tacoma Power Electric Power System, maintaining system integrity and reliability.  Tacoma Power has 840 MW of clean, renewable, hydraulic generation resources, 350 miles of transmission lines, and 1,980 miles of distribution lines. Tacoma Power is registered as a Balancing Authority, Generation Owner & Operator, Transmission Owner & Operator, Transmission Planner, Transmission Service Provider, Planning Coordinator and Distribution Provider. This is a leadership position with approximately 36 FTEs on three teams.  You will supervise and direct the System Operations, System Planning & Transmission Tariff, and Asset Management teams to ensure regulatory compliance obligations are satisfied, system capacity and performance is sufficient and reliability is enhanced.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Power system studies, such as steady-state and dynamic contingency analysis;
  • Manage system expansion and large interconnections;
  • Oversee and direct the preparation of material for NERC and WECC regulations and audits;
  • Investigate compliance issues and mitigation plans;
  • Supervise and review system studies and analysis and prepare recommendations;
  • Conduct engineering studies and projects to recommend enhancements and improve efficiency, performance and reliability of T&D systems;
  • Conduct surveys, load forecasts, plans, studies and cost estimates;
  • Plan, design and assist in implementing new T&D facilities;
  • Engage on transmission issues in regional as well as interconnection-wide forums;
  • Define priorities, goals and operational plans for your teams;
  • Financial management of O&M budget and capital plan;
  • Development of T&D Asset Management strategy, planning and oversight.


Experience Required:


  • Ten years of engineering or system operations experience, two years of which included supervisory/managerial and project manager responsibilities;
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with degree in electrical engineering preferred;
  • Professional Electrical Engineer License preferred;
  • Valid driver’s license or equivalent ability to travel throughout our service area;
  • Successful candidate will have demonstrated competencies and significant accomplishments from prior work experience;
  • NERC System Operator Certificate preferred.


Leadership: Establish, lead, coordinate, direct, and motivate engineering teams to bring assigned tasks to successful completion.  Foster team building among supervisors.  Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with reports, peers, engineers from other electric utilities in the region, consultants, customers, the general public, city, county, state, and federal agencies while coordinating activities and research in support of assigned department programs
