Duties:

A.    Job Summary

Information Systems Technician administers PC/Server platforms running Microsoft Windows and Linux; assists in installation and maintenance of computers, phone system, and miscellaneous networking equipment; supports multiple databases; trains and assists in use of District software and equipment; utilizes strong communication skills and a thorough knowledge of computer technologies.

B.     Functions     

Essential Functions:

  • Install and maintain virtual infrastructure including hosts, storage and networking.
  • Support and maintain both physical and virtual servers.
  • Support, implement and maintain multiple District databases.
  • Administer District email, including MS Exchange, sendmail, mail relay, and spam filter.
  • Perform hardware and software setup, maintenance, troubleshooting and testing on District technology.
  • Respond to District employee questions and issues relating to technology.
  • Diagnose hardware and software issues relating to District equipment and facilitate necessary repairs.
  • Evaluate hardware and software options, make recommendations and coordinate projects to meet future needs.
  • Assist the Information Systems Manager with planning the renewal and replacement of hardware and software applications.
  • Assist with the District’s internal and external websites, as well as its Social Media presence.
  • Assist in administering the District’s Disaster Recovery program, including operating backup and recovery software, managing the District’s backup strategy, and maintaining offsite storage of data.
  • Develop and maintain technical standards and documentation to ensure accurate, current and complete information regarding system configuration and problem resolutions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of District records and information.
  • Assist in E-Records management.
  • Implement and maintain the District’s security policies and procedures, including firewall configuration.
  • Maintain user accounts. This includes adding and removing users, setting permissions, setting group policies and maintaining access levels, as directed.

Additional Functions:

  • Assist in an annual security review to ensure that good security practices are in place and current.
  • Assist the IS Department in the design and implementation of the Department’s Disaster Recovery Plan.
  • Monitor access logs and perform investigations as directed in a fair, honest and unbiased manner.
  • Comply with all applicable RCWs, WACs and District policies.
  • Stay current with information technology and apply training and experience to real world problems.
  • Demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrate the ability to recognize priorities, set and meet deadlines, and organize resources. Must be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism in conduct and appearance at all times.
  • Perform other work duties as assigned.
Experience Required:

 C.    Qualifications

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be familiar with communication cables, personal computers, NIC’s, printers, firewalls, switches, TCP/IP, remote VPN access and network authentication.
  • Experience with VMWare, NetAPP and Cisco, in a production environment, is preferred.
  • Administrative experience with databases and database applications is preferred.
  • Microsoft SharePoint experience is preferred.
  • Must have strong interpersonal/communication skills and function as part of a team.
  • Maintain confidentiality of District records and information.
  • Must have strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Must have the ability to understand, follow and communicate accurate, clear and concise written and verbal information and instructions.
  • Must have ability to prioritize and perform job duties and, with a minimum of supervision, be able to make decisions compatible with previous instructions.
  • Must be willing and able to work after hours and on call.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to travel for training, user groups, etc.

Experience/Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred; or
  • Associates degree in computer science, comparable technical school degree or extensive Information Technology experience is required;
  • Two years experience with Microsoft Server, Active Directory, Exchange, and Networking is preferred.

D.    Typical Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
  • The worker is subject to environmental conditions.

E.     Additional Information

  • Drives a District vehicle to travel between branch offices and to out of town training opportunities.
  • May be required to travel during inclement weather.
  • Keeps Supervisor informed on daily progress in problem areas.
  • Possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
