Basic Function

The Apprentice Lineman is a bargaining unit employee with a keen interest in acquiring the ability to work within District power systems while working under the direction of a foreman and/or journeyman as assigned.  A person within this position needs to demonstrate the ability to follow directions, work independently, be self-motivated, and exercise sound judgment. This position is required to pass a CIP security background check.

Essential Function

An employee in this position will work under the direction of a foreman and /or journeyman, as assigned, such duties of a journeyman as the extent of their training, experience, and knowledge will permit.
Employee shall successfully complete all skilled occupational objectives/steps as outlined in the apprentice Standards for Linemen.
Shall be able to perform all duties of a journeyman during the final period of apprenticeship.

Education

High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.

Experience

Eligibility for this classification requires the applicant/employee to meet the State of Washington and District’s Joint Apprenticeship Standards.
Acquire a valid first aid card including CPR training, equivalent to the State of Washington requirements for industrial first aid within one year of starting the apprenticeship.
Valid Washington State Driver’s License with ability to acquire a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to include required endorsements within six months of starting the apprenticeship.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to acquire knowledge and understanding of District and Washington State Electrical Workers Safety Rules and Regulations.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of District policies and procedures for employees including personnel and safety policies.
General knowledge of the District’s Strategic Plan.
Knowledge of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and cooperate with all levels of District personnel, contractors, and customers.
Demonstrated ability to follow and understand oral and written instructions.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and be self-motivated.
Demonstrated ability to problem solve.
Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, especially in stressful or crisis situations.
Write legibly and be able to maintain records, files, and fill out forms.

Physical Requirements

Must be mentally and physically fit for duty.
Able to perform activities at unprotected heights of less than 10 feet.
Able to work in high noise/vibration areas.
Work in confined spaces or areas that restrict movement.
Work in close proximity of rotating and high voltage equipment.
Able to work in extreme heat or cold, both inside and outside.
Able to reach above the shoulder level.
Able to differentiate colors and utilize senses (sight, hearing, touch, feel, and smell).
Able to ascend/descend stairs and ladders.
Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Willing to work off of a ladder or scaffolding and in confined areas.
Use computers and write legibly.
