Duties:

The Board of Directors of Harney Electric Cooperative invites applications for the position of General Manager. The Current GM has announced his retirement after 15 years, and the Board has asked the previous GM to help facilitate the search process. Harney Electric Cooperative is headquartered in Hines, Oregon, which adjoins the Harney County seat of Burns, with a combined population of around 4500. The Cooperative’s service area of 20,000 square miles serves approximately 1200 members and 4100 accounts in southeastern Oregon and northern Nevada. Irrigation comprises roughly 75% of the system’s load. Harney Electric has 22 employees, 7 of which live in its Nevada service territory. Harney Electric’s system consists of 12 Substations, almost 2600 miles of 24.9 kV distribution line, 348 miles of 115 KV transmission line and five transmission switch yards. Harney Electric has one satellite office in Orovada, Nevada and a service center in Fields, Oregon. The General Manager reports to a seven member board of directors providing timely information on operational, financial and business activities. The GM leads the management team to complete work plans and related activities, and represents the organization within the electric utility industry on both a state and regional basis.

Experience Required:

A Bachelor’s degree in engineering, finance, business or a related field is required. Five years of experience in senior management may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree. At least ten years of electric utility management experience is required and a Rural Electric Cooperative background is strongly desired. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent communication and people skills. Hands on knowledge of utility operations, rate structure, financial management, and safety are required. The ability to adapt to semi-isolated small town living and to relate to the predominantly agricultural/rural membership base are essential.
