The purpose of the Field Engineer is to design and stake line extensions, distribution and transmission lines in accordance with KEC standards.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Designs, surveys and stakes new customer line extensions and maintenance requests.
  1. Researches property ownership.
  1. Notarizes easements.
  1. Assists the Project Engineer on capital projects and may engineer as directed.
  1. Designs line extensions to KEC and NESC Standards.
  1. Sizes transformers and conductors to meet customer needs.
  1. Meets with customers or their representatives to assist with the design and plan phases of new line extensions.
  1. Quotes costs for new line extensions
  1. Makes cost estimates for all phases for power line construction.
  1. Represents KEC on various utility coordinating groups.
  1. Works with state, county and city road relocations.
  1. Makes recommendations for improvements.
  1. Checks invoices for accuracy.
  1. Ensures we stay within the prescribed budget.

Experience Required:

Job Requirements:

  1. Education/Experience:Two (2) year degree in Civil Engineering Technology, one of the Applied Science fields or equivalent experience in electrical utility design projects.
  2. Knowledge and Skill
    1. Experience working with customers in various situations.
    2. Knowledgeable of NESC and NEC.
    3. Knowledgeable of KEC power line construction methods, materials and equipment.
    4. Experience with various types of surveying equipment.
    5. Effective written and verbal communications.
    6. Strong math skills, particularly trigonometry.
    7. Strong mechanical aptitude.
    8. Highly motivated.
    9. Excellent interpersonal skills.
    10. Attention to accuracy and detail.
    11. Strong PC skills and ability to effectively use current KEC computer systems, including AutoCAD.
    12. Be a qualified electrical worker.
    13. Valid driver’s license.
  1. Mental Demands:
    1. Must be able to think through design and construction processes and be able to lay out workable designs with realistic time lines and construction sequences.
    2. Be able to calculate pole, pole top assembly, conductor, guy and anchor strengths and be able to assess NESC code requirements for utility installations.
