Distribution Planning Engineer III R16-346



Perform engineering studies and analyses on PGE’s Distribution System.  Prepare engineering solutions to mitigate system risk and optimize system investment.  Document study results, make recommendations, and foster project scoping/estimating processes when preparing capital project funding requests.  This position requires the ability to use distribution software applications.




  • (40%) Perform engineering studies for PGE’s distribution system.  Evaluate system performance, and recommend engineering solutions to address system risk, reliability, and capacity limitations for the five to ten year planning horizon.  Document performed studies, analyses, results, and recommendations.
  •  (30%) Manage planning related activities within bounded regional areas with minimal oversight by peers or supervision.
  • (20%) Coordinate activities involving internal workgroups to develop the justification, scope, and estimate, for new capital projects consistent with PGE’s asset management strategy.
  •  (10%) Maintain Accurate Modeling – Update T&D databases to reflect current equipment and facility parameters.  Document system changes.  Contribute to improvements in distribution system modeling tools and processes.
Experience Required:



  • Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Desire a minimum four years of engineering experience with a Professional Engineering License (PE) or eight years of engineering experience without a PE license.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective group presentation skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering/economic principles and concepts.
  • Thorough knowledge of the utility business.
  • Working knowledge of T&D protection schemes and automation solutions.
  • Working knowledge of applicable policies, rules, regulations, and codes in the utility engineering field.
  • Familiarity with utility design standards and work practices.
  • Ability to use powerflow software applications (e.g. CYME).
  • Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license or the ability to obtain a license.
