Alaska Village Electric Cooperative, Inc., a generation and distribution utility serving 57 villages in Alaska, is seeking a Construction Foreman.

Overview:

This position is responsible for support, coordinate, support and schedule field personnel working on AVEC construction projects. Must be able to identify and interpret potential problems to maximize safety and productivity, respond to emergencies, and provide leadership and technical knowledge to assist in the construction of AVEC equipment and facilities. This position will supervise construction of all the Cooperative’s remote plant facilities, monitor safe performance of construction activities and compliance with applicate safety laws and policies. This position will also review plans for accuracy and completeness and oversee the procurement and delivery of needed materials.  Both long and short term construction planning and coordination will be required to ensure productivity, timelines and goals are met.

Education:
High School Diploma, or equivalent

Experience:
At least 10 years of related work experience at a similar complexity. Experience in remote Alaskan Construction projects preferred.

Specialized Experience:
Working knowledge of the installation of electrical distribution, including transformers, reactors, power cables, meters and metering, fusing, circuit breakers, etc., is required.

Working knowledge of Construction to include, but not be limited to, procurement specifications, testing, plumbing, electrical, structural, control systems, construction tool equipment operation, maintenance and repair.

Must be able to maintain high quality and complete Construction records. Must understand the need for, be interested in and be efficient with substantial paperwork and computer processing.

Supervision:
Experience training, or overseeing processes involving varying oversight across several areas construction projects.

Travel Requirement:
up to 25%

This job involves intermittent stressful situations arising out of multicultural communities located in remote Alaskan sites in which resources are often not consistent with apparent on-site practical needs.  This position is directly responsible for the Construction activities in all AVEC locations, and, as such, the position is a high stress position, demanding that the employee filling the position be able to respond to inquiries regarding construction quickly and accurately, while maintaining a consistently professional and calm emotional demeanor. In this respect, the job may require:

  1. Consistently long hours on both a daily and weekly basis;
  2. Intermittent trips (travel up to 25% of the time) to remote Alaska villages located in extreme climatic conditions and inaccessible by commercial carriers; Intermittent subsistence lifestyle in remote arctic villages while involved in on-site review of electrical facilities, which lifestyle may require sleeping in industrial facilities in locations without beds, preparation of one’s own meals, and general lack of amenities common to commercial public accommodations;
  3. Intermittent stressful work conditions in which the employee is required to exercise significant discretion in judgment, as well as a consistently calm emotional demeanor during times of high conflict.
  4. Intermittent on-site review by travel on foot, all-terrain vehicles, pickup trucks, open boats, single engine aircraft, and other available on-site transportation in remote arctic villages and environs for the purpose of inspecting facilities.
