Meet the NWPPA Board: Emily Compton

EmilyComptonEmily Compton is the member and energy services manager at Plumas-Sierra Rural Electric Cooperative in Portola, California. She joined PSREC eight years ago and previously worked as the co-op’s community relations manager. Before PSREC, she was the outreach coordinator at CLEAResult, a company that provides energy efficiency, energy transition, and energy sustainability services. What are the current challenges at your utility?

PSREC is working on a new transmission line, Fort Sage, to tie into the east side. The line will provide increased reliability for our members and import renewables. PSREC is currently transmission dependent on Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and the Fort Sage project will allow PSREC to better keep the lights on for our members. Another issue we have is maintaining affordability and reliability in the face of more and more regulation. Supply chain issues have continued into 2025—equipment and materials are difficult to obtain and continue to increase in cost. Finally, wildfire insurance, liability, and mitigation costs continue to rise, while investments to harden our infrastructure come at a high cost that is borne by our members.

What do you see as the current challenges in the industry?

Much of what Plumas-Sierra is facing is shared by our fellow cooperatives and publicly owned utilities.

How does NWPPA help your utility and the industry with these challenges?

NWPPA provides top-notch training that ensures PSREC staff have up-to-date industry knowledge and can serve our members to the best of their ability. NWPPA’s representation and support on legislative and regulatory affairs also ensure that small utilities’ voices are heard in Washington, D.C.

Any hobbies outside of the public power world?

I enjoy being outside with my husband and our golden retriever, Daisy. I also like to go snow skiing in the winter and boating in the summer.
