Substation Transmission Distribution Dispatcher (Local 125)

A SubTransmission Dispatcher is an electrically trained person who has a functional understanding of substation equipment and line equipment operation, has a clear and thorough understanding of switching processes, and can provide routine and emergency instructions for clearances, assurances, holds, paralleling feeders, charging authorizations and miscellaneous switching procedures.

  • Ensures relay zones of protection are identified and determines how these will affect system operation in view of switching to be performed.
  • Monitors and maintains system voltage at acceptable levels to prevent damage to customer equipment and monitors and controls equipment to mitigate line and equipment over-loading conditions.
  • Monitors and operates the electrical network within the area of responsibility and has a thorough understanding of substation security procedures and established dispatch and field work practices.
  • Consistently maintains and provides a safe working environment for field employees within the assigned area and scope of responsibility.
  • This person will also understand and adhere to company policy regarding communication with field operations personnel, as well as understand and adhere to company policy regarding informational updates of system conditions and emergencies to management.
  • Will understand the requirement to provide the Outage Coordinators with timely, updated information in regards to outages and status of outages, as well as information as to employees who may be actively working after hours.
  • Shift work may be required.

Requirements for this position include:

  • Must have a High School Diploma, GED, or proof of equivalent and be a member of IBEW Local 125 in good standing or eligible to join membership.
  • Competency in the operation of SCADA, CADOPs/netCADOPs, distribution operations systems and related technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze power outages via SCADA and field input.
  • Familiarity with Word, Excel, and COMPASS.
  • Ability to maintain an accurate system log of all pertinent conditions and activities affecting the assigned area in a timely manner.
  • Acceptable verbal, written and word processing skills and be capable of authoring clear, accurate and concise switching procedures using common electric utility dispatching and operating terminology.
  • Thorough working knowledge of APM/Safety Orders and be able to respond promptly to requests for assistance from emergency agencies such as fire, police, medical, etc.

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the above requirements and have the following:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or will consider electrical theory, applied technical job experience, demonstrated physics aptitude or combination of education and experience.
